Old houses, new houses and backup power in Morgan Park

Up on the ridge, some Morgan Park homes date back well over a century, and their wiring has usually been patched by several owners along the way. A few blocks away are houses built much more recently, with modern panels but not always enough circuits for how people live now. We work on both, and the first visit is usually spent finding out what is really in the walls.

For a lot of homeowners here, the other worry is storms. When the power goes out during heavy rain, the basement sump pump stops with it, and that is often when the water comes in. A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch, or a simpler inlet and interlock for a portable generator, keeps the sump pump, furnace and refrigerator running until ComEd restores power.

Standby generators and transfer switches

We install standby generators with automatic transfer switches, or a portable generator inlet with a panel interlock, and make sure the sump pump and furnace are on the circuits that get backup power.

Rewiring on the ridge

In the older homes we replace fuse boxes, assess any knob-and-tube that is still live, and rewire room by room so you are not without power for long stretches.

EV chargers for newer homes

Newer Morgan Park houses may already have a panel with room to spare. We add a dedicated Level 2 charger circuit for any brand, in the garage or on an outside wall, run in conduit to Chicago code.

Permits and inspections in Morgan Park

All of this falls under the Chicago Electrical Code. Generator work has to be done right: the transfer switch or interlock keeps the generator from feeding back into ComEd's lines, which protects the crews working to restore power. Like all residential wiring in Chicago, the new circuits run in metal conduit. The permit goes through the Chicago Department of Buildings, and we are there when the inspector comes out.

Morgan Park electrical questions

What size generator do I need to keep my sump pump running?

It depends on what you want to keep on. A sump pump, furnace blower, refrigerator and a few lights need far less than a whole house with central air. We go through your panel with you, list what matters during an outage and size the generator and transfer switch to match, so you are not paying for more than you need.

Is a portable generator with an interlock a safe option?

Yes, when it is installed correctly. We put a dedicated inlet on the outside of the house and an interlock on the panel, so the main breaker has to be off before the generator can feed your circuits. That keeps power from back-feeding onto ComEd's lines. Never plug a generator into a wall outlet.

My house is newer. Why would it need electrical work?

Newer homes usually have a sound panel and grounded wiring, but many were built with the minimum number of circuits. Adding a home office, a garage charger or a kitchen appliance can mean tripping breakers. Often the fix is a few dedicated circuits rather than any major work, and we will tell you if that is the case.
