Licensed Electrician Serving Worth, IL

Worth is a close-knit, mostly single-family village just southwest of Oak Lawn, with a housing stock heavy on ranch and split-level homes from the 1950s through the 1970s. That means a lot of lower-level family rooms, basements and garages, and most of the electrical work we do in Worth happens in exactly those spaces.

Split-levels, basements and garages in Worth

Split-level homes are common in Worth, and their lower levels are where the wiring gets interesting. Many were finished decades ago with paneling, a single ceiling light and a few outlets all hanging off one circuit. Now people want that space to work as a real family room, an office or a guest room. We rewire those lower levels with proper circuits, GFCI protection where code calls for it and better lighting, and we check the panel first so the new space doesn't overload it.

Garages are the other big one. A lot of Worth homeowners use the garage as a workshop or want an EV charger out there, and the original garage circuit usually can't handle a compressor, a table saw or a charger. We run dedicated circuits or a small sub-panel to cover it. And because many homes here rely on a sump pump, we also install generator inlets, interlocks and standby generators so a summer storm outage doesn't turn into a wet floor downstairs.

Permits and inspections in Worth

Worth issues its own electrical permits through the village, separate from Oak Lawn and the City of Chicago. Finishing a basement or adding a garage sub-panel is permitted work, and the inspector will want to see the rough wiring before walls or ceilings get closed up. We register with the village when the work requires it, pull the permit, schedule the inspections and meet the inspector on site.

Worth electrical questions

Do I need a permit to finish the lower level of my split-level?

If you're adding circuits, outlets or lighting, yes. Worth, like most villages, wants electrical work permitted and inspected, and the rough wiring has to pass inspection before drywall goes up. We pull the permit, line up the inspection with your drywall schedule and make sure the work is ready when the inspector arrives.

What's the best way to keep my sump pump running during an outage?

The simplest option is a portable generator connected through an inlet and an interlock on your panel, which lets you power the sump, furnace and fridge safely without extension cords. A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch does the same job without anyone having to be home. We'll explain both and quote whichever fits.

Can my garage handle a workshop and an EV charger at the same time?

Often not on the original circuit. Most older garages were fed with one small circuit for a light and the door opener. For a charger plus tools, we usually run a larger feeder and set a small sub-panel in the garage. We check your house panel first so we know there's room before we give you a price.
