Licensed Electrician Serving West Pullman, Chicago
West Pullman is a residential neighborhood of bungalows and frame homes just west of the historic Pullman district. Many homes here were built in the early 1900s and still have old fuse boxes or early panels well past their intended lifespan, along with wiring that has been added to, piece by piece, over the years.

Fuse boxes and frame homes in West Pullman
A lot of West Pullman homes still run on a fuse box, sometimes with a small sub-panel added later for a dryer or air conditioner. The usual warning signs are fuses that blow when the microwave and a space heater run together, and fuses that have been swapped for a bigger size so they stop blowing. That is a real fire risk, because the wire behind an oversized fuse is no longer protected. We replace the fuse box with a properly sized breaker panel.
Older frame homes have their own quirks. Some were built with open wall cavities that run from the basement up to the attic, which makes fishing new wire easier but also means old wiring can be hidden almost anywhere. Before quoting, we check the attic and basement for knob-and-tube, brittle insulation, and amateur splices. If the house needs more than a panel swap, we tell you what matters most and what can safely wait.

Permits and inspections in West Pullman
West Pullman is inside the City of Chicago, so electrical work follows the Chicago Electrical Code, which is stricter than what most suburbs use. New wiring goes in metal conduit (EMT) instead of plastic-sheathed cable, even in a frame house, and permits go through the Chicago Department of Buildings. EMT Electric pulls the permit, coordinates fuse box and service changes with ComEd, and meets the city inspector.
West Pullman electrical questions
How can I tell if my house still has knob-and-tube wiring?
Look in the basement and attic for single wires strung on white porcelain knobs or running through porcelain tubes in the joists, usually with cloth insulation. Two-prong outlets and old push-button switches are clues, but they don't prove it. Much of it hides inside walls, so we check the spots we can reach and test circuits to give you a real answer.
Why do I keep blowing the same fuse?
Usually that circuit is carrying more than it was designed for, often a kitchen or bedroom that now runs appliances and electronics the house was never wired for. It can also be a loose connection or a failing fixture. We find the cause, and the fix may be a new dedicated circuit rather than a whole new panel.
Does a whole frame house have to be rewired at once?
Not usually. We can rewire in stages, starting with the circuits that pose the most risk, like old knob-and-tube in the attic or overloaded kitchen circuits. Each stage is permitted and inspected. That spreads out the cost, lets you plan the work around your schedule, and you get a firm quote for each part.
