EMT Electric
Residential & Commercial Electrical Service

Licensed Electrician Serving Mount Greenwood, Chicago

Mount Greenwood's quiet, close-knit blocks are filled with well-kept brick bungalows and ranch homes built from the 1940s through the 1960s. Many are due for a panel upgrade or additional circuits as families add appliances, EV chargers and finished basements the original electrical service was never built to handle. Our shop in Oak Lawn is just a few minutes away.

Garages, basements and EV chargers in Mount Greenwood

A typical Mount Greenwood lot has the house up front and a detached garage off the alley. That garage often has one old circuit, or a line buried decades ago that no longer meets code. When a family buys an electric car, the real question is how to get a 240-volt circuit out to the garage, and whether the house panel has room for it. We look at both before we quote.

Inside, many of these homes have a basement that was finished in stages, sometimes with wiring that was never inspected. We find a lot of extension-cord style runs, ungrounded outlets and too many lights on one breaker. When a basement is being redone, we usually recommend a sub-panel down there so the new bedroom, office or family room has its own circuits instead of borrowing from the kitchen.

The jobs we're called for most often here.

EV chargers in detached garages

We run a dedicated 240-volt circuit from the house to the garage, in conduit as Chicago requires, and mount a Level 2 charger of any brand. If the panel cannot carry it, we tell you before we start.

Basement remodels

For finished basements we lay out recessed lights, outlets and dedicated circuits, add a sub-panel when the main panel is full, and put GFCI protection where the code calls for it.

200-amp upgrades

Many postwar homes here started with 60- or 100-amp service. A 200-amp upgrade gives room for an EV charger, central air and a basement sub-panel, and we coordinate the service work with ComEd.

Permits and inspections in Mount Greenwood

Mount Greenwood sits right on the city's edge, but it is still Chicago, so the stricter Chicago Electrical Code applies, not the rules your neighbors across the line in the suburbs follow. That is especially important for garage and EV charger work, where the circuit out to the garage has to be run in metal conduit. We pull the permit through the Chicago Department of Buildings and meet the inspector.

Mount Greenwood electrical questions

Can my panel handle a Level 2 EV charger?

It depends on the size of your service and what is already on it. Many Mount Greenwood homes still have 100-amp service with central air added later, which may leave little room. We do a load calculation before quoting, and if the panel is tight we will explain whether an upgrade or a smaller charger circuit makes more sense.

How do you get power out to a detached garage?

Usually with a new circuit or a small sub-panel fed from the house, run underground or overhead depending on the layout of the yard. In Chicago that line has to be run in conduit. If your garage already has an old feed, we check whether it can be reused or should be replaced.

Does an existing finished basement need to be rewired?

Not necessarily. If the wiring was done properly, it may only need a few fixes. But many basements here were finished bit by bit over the years, and we often find ungrounded outlets, missing GFCI protection or overloaded circuits. We check what is there and tell you what actually needs to change.
